Writing is…

By Noah Black

Writing is when many thoughts in your head are buzzing around like bees and you feel that you need to do something to get the thoughts out so you write them down on paper. You may just want others to see your thoughts and ideas so you write them down, or you may just want to remember what your thoughts were. Writing goes from a thought, to a story, to words on paper. There are so many different kinds of writing. There’s happy writing, sad writing, surprising writing, funny writing, scary writing, informative writing, persuasive writing, action writing, entertaining writing, and more. Writing is a way of communicating our thoughts with others without having to memorize it all and having to say it all to someone else. Writing is one of the most useful communications in our world today.

Writing isn’t just used for making stories or telling someone how to do something. You can use writing to order products, write reminders to yourself, pay taxes, write letters to a friend, or learn the ingredients of a factory food. Try to think about what life would be like without writing. We couldn’t read books. We’d have to memorize everything we wanted to say and show. We wouldn’t know the ingredients of foods. We couldn’t order products, and we couldn’t even go to the movies or a magic show or a play! We wouldn’t know about these things without writing. Almost everything has to have writing to happen. Without writing, we couldn’t do much at all.

Writing has been around for a very, very long time. Writing existed since ancient Egypt and even thousands of years before that. Ancient cave people, way before ancient Egypt, used pictures as writing. Writing was just as useful to them as it is to us. They used it as communication to express their thoughts. One of the reasons archeologists know a lot about the past of ancient Egypt or ancient Rome is that they found writing about it. As you can see, writing plays a very big part in the world.

Where I’m From Poem

By Noah Black

I am from my small, strong bike that is red and fast, from wearing Gap and Old Navy shirts and pants.

I am from a three story, red-bricked house and its fun-filled basement. I am from the magnolia tree with pink blossoms in the spring and bare branches in the winter.

I am from hot bowls of chili on Halloween nights. I’m from a family of hard-working people from Grandma Jan and my cousin Dom.

I am from Blacks.

I am from a family who loves to cook and from “Don’t feed the dog cookies!”

I am from the Christian religion and going to church on Sundays. I’m from Pittsburgh.

I am from stories about my mom and dad being mischievous children and sneaking cookies and pressing buttons they shouldn’t have pressed.

I am from Italian, Irish, and German people. I’m from chasing my dog around the yard, and never catching him.

I am from wrestling around with my brothers and playing sports and board games.  I am from a lot of experiences, and I am thankful.

Loved your line about mischievous children in your “Where I’m From” piece!
